The National Cancer Institute reports that women are already more likely than men to have one-third of their children die within four years of diagnosis. Of the approximately 9,300 women who participated in these events in 2005–06, only 6,500 of those women were men. This was despite the fact that the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recently published a comprehensive review finding that men age between 50 and 50 have three times more breast cancer cases than women. The research has already made headlines because of its finding. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force is now calling on its members to review the findings (see "National Cancer Task Force Reports that Breast Cancer and Age Still Causes Among Men, 2005–06").
It is important to note that for men older than age 50, there is still a significant gap between the amount of cancer diagnosed and the total breast cancer reported in women. Most recently, the CDC conducted a large meta-analysis of observational cohort studies to determine the relative contribution of age at first diagnosis to the relative risk of any breast cancer diagnosis.
