The design of the B-51B is a significant departure from its predecessor, the B-1A and was designed with an overall goal of reaching greater capacity and greater range of aircraft, said Tom Wernich, a vice president at Boeing. B-61 aircraft use a larger radar and more powerful avionics of its own, Wernich said.

After the B-51, Boeing plans to use its existing fleet of Boeing 767s, including the 737 MAX and B87s, and Boeing 777-300, the U.S. Air Force will continue to build and produce B-61s by 2018, he added.

Boeing says if successful, B-51 flights would lead to over 710 B-1U.

The B-51 is based on a design built by French contractor EADS for Airbus Defense & Security.

The A-86A "Joint Air Command" is also a B-51A.

The B-51F engine is designed to improve combat flexibility, reduce energy costs and also reduce the cost of maintenance, according to Wernich.

The new "Airway" bomber and its predecessors could have one of the world's most complex and powerful fighter jets, Wernich said, given the amount that has been spent on research.
